Gap Elimination

Commercial coffee grinder using Load Controls PMP-25 for motor load monitoring, jam detection, and equipment protection.

In grinding operations, the time between when the wheel starts spinning and when it actually contacts the workpiece is pure wasted cycle time. Detecting that exact moment of contact manually is inconsistent and unreliable, leading to inefficiencies that compound across every production shift.

Load Controls' motor power sensors monitor the grinding wheel motor's true power draw in real time, identifying the precise instant the wheel touches the workpiece through a measurable rise in load. The moment contact is detected, the control signals the machine to shift from rapid approach feed to grinding feed, eliminating air-grinding time entirely. All sensors are manufactured in the USA, ISO 9001:2015 certified, and install directly at the motor control panel with no contact with the cutting process.

Q: How does the sensor detect wheel-to-workpiece contact?

The sensor measures true power draw on the grinding motor. When the wheel contacts the workpiece, resistance increases and power draw rises, the sensor detects this change and signals the machine to switch feed rates.

Q: Will the sensor work across different grinding wheel configurations?

Yes. Load Controls sensors are calibrated to the motor's power range, not the wheel type, making them compatible across grinding wheel configurations without modification.

Q: Does gap elimination require changes to the existing machine control system?

No. Our sensors output standard 0–10V and 4–20mA analog signals and Modbus that integrate with existing machine controls without reprogramming.
