Refiner

Paper converting machine using Load Controls UPC for motor load monitoring, jam detection, and process optimization.

Refiners in paper and pulp manufacturing operate at the critical intersection of energy consumption and product quality, too little refining and the pulp is underprocessed; too much and you're wasting energy and potentially degrading fibre quality. Monitoring refiner load through basic current sensing leaves too much room for process variability.

Load Controls' power sensors measure the true power draw on refiner motors in real time, giving mill engineers precise, continuous visibility into refining intensity. By tracking load against established process profiles, our sensors detect when refining conditions deviate from target, enabling immediate corrective action. All sensors are non-invasive, install at the motor control panel, output standard 0–10V, 4–20mA, and Modbus signals, and are manufactured in the USA to ISO 9001:2015 standards.

Q: How does power monitoring improve refiner energy efficiency?

By maintaining refiner motor load at its optimal target level, our sensors prevent over-refining, which wastes energy without improving pulp quality.

Q: Can the sensor detect refiner plate wear over time?

Plate wear gradually changes the load profile of the refiner motor. Load Controls sensors track these trends over time, giving maintenance teams early warning that plate inspection or replacement may be needed.

Q: Is the sensor compatible with both single-disc and double-disc refiners?

Yes. Load Controls sensors work with any electrically driven refiner regardless of disc configuration, measuring true motor power draw independent of the mechanical arrangement.
