Choppers

Industrial mixing tank with Load Controls PMP-25 monitoring agitator motor load for efficient process control and equipment protection.

Choppers in pharmaceutical and food processing applications handle materials that vary widely in consistency, density, and resistance and a jam or overload can cause serious damage to blades, drive shafts, and motors before a conventional protection relay responds.

Load Controls' power sensors monitor chopper motor load continuously, detecting jam conditions, blade overloads, and abnormal resistance through changes in true power draw. When load exceeds the configured threshold, the sensor triggers an automatic motor shutdown, stopping the chopper before the jam causes blade damage, shaft failure, or motor burnout. Low load detection also catches situations where the chopper is running empty or material feed has stopped. All sensors are non-invasive, install at the motor control panel, output standard 0–10V, 4–20mA, and Modbus signals, and are manufactured in the USA to ISO 9001:2015 standards.

Q: How does the sensor handle the high load during chopper startup?

Adjustable time delays allow the sensor to account for normal high load during startup, only activating protection once the chopper reaches its steady running condition.

Q: Does chopper monitoring work on both wet and dry chopping applications?

Yes. Load Controls sensors monitor motor power regardless of the material being processed - wet, dry, fibrous, or granular.

Q: Can the sensor distinguish between a jam and a normally heavy load?

Yes. Configurable set points and time delays allow you to tune the sensor to your specific process, filtering out normal heavy loads while still catching genuine jam conditions.
