Chipper Monitoring

Wastewater clarifier using Load Controls PMP-25 for scraper drive motor monitoring, sludge processing, and process control.

Wood chippers in paper and pulp operations run under constantly varying load conditions - log size, moisture content, and wood density all affect how hard the chipper motor works at any given moment. An undetected jam or overload can cause significant damage to the chipper mechanism and bring an entire mill line to a halt.

Load Controls' power sensors continuously monitor chipper motor load, detecting jam conditions, overloads, and abnormal load spikes the moment they develop. When load exceeds a configured threshold, the sensor triggers an automatic shutdown or alarm, stopping the chipper before a jam becomes a mechanical failure. Low load detection also catches situations where the chipper is running empty or feed has stopped unexpectedly. All sensors are non-invasive, install at the motor control panel, and are manufactured in the USA to ISO 9001:2015 standards.

Q: Can Load Controls sensors handle the high-power motors typically used in chippers?

Yes. Load Controls offers sensors covering a wide range of motor sizes, making them suitable for the large motors driving industrial chippers.

Q: How does the sensor distinguish between a normal heavy log and a jam condition?

Jam conditions typically produce a sustained overload rather than a brief spike. Adjustable time delays on the set points allow you to filter out momentary load peaks while still catching genuine jam conditions.

Q: Can chipper monitoring integrate with the mill's existing control system?

Yes. Standard 0–10V, 4–20mA, and Modbus outputs allow direct integration with DCS, PLC, or SCADA systems already in use.
